Mel Gibson: Clowning Around

On the Braveheart set, Mel Gibson, an inveterate prankster, began calling his character "Mad Mac" and generally strived to maintain a healthy balance between work and play. When actors were performing intensely emotional scenes, Gibson often instructed someone to stand just off-camera - wearing a red rubber clown nose.

[On her first day on the set of Conspiracy Theory, Julia Roberts was surprised to receive a "gift" from Gibson: a wrapped, stuffed rat.]

[Trivia: "The arrival of a good clown," Sir Thomas Syndenham once remarked, "exercises a more beneficial effect upon the health of a town than 20 asses laden with pills."]
