Sally Field Acceptance SpeechWhen Sally Field won her second Oscar for her role as Edna Spalding in Robert Benton's Places in the Heart (1984), she approached the podium in a state of euphoria. Her acceptance speech is now legendary: "I haven't had an orthodox career and I wanted more than anything to have your respect," she declared. "The first time [for her title role in Norma Rae, in 1980] I didn't feel it, but this time I feel it, and I can't deny the fact that you like me! Right now, you like me!"
["The Academy is slacking off in the class quotient," Sally said after her first award in 1980. "After all, I won!" Some time after receiving her second Oscar, she traveled to Harvard to accept the Harvard Lampoon's Hasty Pudding award. "My last acceptance speech received a lot of heat," she playfully remarked, cradling her prize. "But I have to say, I really like this pot, and obviously it likes me." (Field also lampooned the classic speech in an ad for Charles Scwab & Co.)]
