Elvis & Nipper

During a show in Los Angeles in 1957, Elvis Presley shocked the audience by picking up a toy dog (named Nipper) which his record company had given him and pretending to make love to it. The stunt caused such a commotion that fans kept screaming at the end of the show and theatre bosses were obliged to announce (for the first time in history): "Elvis has left the building."

Los Angeles police attended the King's next concert planning to arrest him when he repeated the act. When he picked Nipper up, the police prepared to pounce. Elvis, however, had been warned by his manager (Colonel Tom Parker) and simply drew a halo around Nipper's head.

[In October 2003, Nipper fetched £3,000 at auction.]
