Michael Moore: War in... Iraq?In November 2003, Michael Moore addressed a group of students at Cambridge University. "I actually hold Blair more responsible for this than Bush," he said of the situation in Iraq, "because Bush is an idiot... I understand why the American public was fooled by the lies: we live in a system of enforced ignorance. The way the media works, the way our education system works, it's all about keeping us stupid...
"National Geographic did a survey of young Americans your age, eighteen to twenty-four. Eighty-seven per cent couldn't find Iraq on the map. Shouldn't it be Rule No. 1 that if you're going to invade a country you should at least know where the country is? Sixty-three per cent could not find England on the map. I mean, folks, really. I think you should say to Mr. Blair, ‘Why are you kissing our ass if we don't even know where the f--- you are?'...
"But here's the best number from that survey: eleven per cent could not find the United States on the globe! [Hooting] When you have a country that is this disoriented, it's extremely easy to manipulate people with lies and fear, and that's how Bush has gotten away with it. That's our excuse. What's yours?"
[Trivia: How did Michael Moore get the video footage of George W. Bush's response to the attacks on 9/11 (while reading My Pet Goat to a class of children)? "I figured somebody must have videotaped it and a teacher had and so for $5 they sent it to us." In June 2004, a Virginia cinema showed Fahrenheit 9/11 with no sound. A disgruntled customer later explained: "Republicans own the movie chain."]
