Werner Herzog: One-Man March

In 1974, German director Werner Herzog hatched a plan to prevent a close friend (the film historian Lotte Eisner) from dying in distant Paris, France. Lotte wouldn't dare to die until he had visited her on her deathbed, he declared - and promptly set off for Paris, on foot, from Munich, Germany!

[Herzog (who walked about 500 miles) was right: Eisner was delighted to see him and went on to live for another eight years.]

[Trivia: To raise money for his first films, Werner Herzog worked nights in a steel factory (in 1961).]
