Curnonsky: Splat"Curnonsky" (the pen-name of Maurice Edmond Sailland) was France's most celebrated 20th century food writer. Known in Paris as the "Prince of gastronomes," he referred to himself in the third person and was likened by Gertrude Stein to "an unfinished tub of butter." Indeed, morbidly obese, Curnonsky died one summer day after leaning out too far, tipping over, and landing with a splat on the street below.
[According to legend, eighty restaurants reserved a table for Curnonsky every night, in case he showed up.]
