Western Civilization

Mahatma Gandhi was once asked what he thought about Western civilization. "I think," he replied, "it would be a very good idea."

["An eye for an eye," Gandhi remarked on another occasion, "will make the whole world go blind." Gandhi's 'seven social sins'? "Politics without principle, wealth without work, commerce without morality, pleasure without conscience, education without character, science without humanity, and worship without sacrifice." ]

Gandhi, Mohandas Karamchand ["Mahatma"] (1869-1948) Indian statesman and spiritual leader [noted for his leading role in India's struggle for independence; and for his campaigns to: overthrow the British raj using civil disobedience ("passive resistance"), improve the lot of the most downtrodden casts of Hindu society (the Untouchables), increase small handicraft industries in the chronically poor rural areas, and reconcile the warring (Muslim and Hindu) Indian factions]
