Where's Nina? The famous cartoonist Al Hirschfeld frequently hid the name of his daughter Nina in his caricatures and finding hidden 'Nina's became something of a sport among his fans. The U.S. Air Force, however, also once used Hirschfeld's work - as an exercise to train bomber pilots to spot targets.
[On another occasion, a Pentagon consultant scanned several Hirschfeld cartoons looking for 'Nina's as part of a $60,000 grant to study and improve camouflage techniques.]
[Trivia: One evening in 1926, Hirschfeld went to the theater with his friend Richard Maney, the legendary publicity agent. During the show, Hirschfeld sketched the French actor Sacha Guitry on his program. Maney, recognizing Hirschfeld's gift, encouraged him to re-create the sketch on a clean sheet of paper. Maney promptly sold the sketch to the Herald Tribune and Hirschfeld was on his way.]
