Winchester's FinesFor 27 years, the world record for an overdue book was held by a certain M. Dodd, who checked out Dr J. Currie's Febrile Diseases from the University of Cincinnati Medical Library in 1823. It was returned by his grandson in 1958.
In 1985, however, a book was returned to England's Somerset County Library, having acrued a fine of approximately £3,000. The perpertrator? The Bishop of Winchester, who borrowed the book - a register of property transactions in Taunton between 1641 and 1648
- in 1650 from the Somerset county records office. Its title? The Book of Fines.
