Gringoes.com's Mark Taylor: When living in Brazil there's not only the issue of learning the language of Portuguese, there's also the issue of learning the body language… One gesture that has a different meaning here is the OK sign, where you take the thumb and index finger to form an O. I won't give the exact details of what it means, but it's essentially the same as the V-sign in the USA or UK, hence offensive! I made the mistake of making this to my Brazilian mother-in-law when trying to tell her how good her cooking was… The HSBC bank, in recent TV advertising in the UK, even made reference to this miscommunication as one of a number of cultural ...

Malcolm-Jamal Warner: "One of the things that I talk about to actors all the time about the audition process is: it's not always about that particular job that you think you're going in to audition for. It's really an opportunity just to kind of show 'you.' You may not get that job but it may lead to a different job. For example? "People vs O.J. Simpson—I talk about that experience all the time, because I actually read for [prosecutor] Chris Darden and it was probably one of the best auditions that I had ever had. I got wonderful feedback from casting and then months went by and I didn't hear anything… I just kind of forgot about it and then ...

One night in 1993, Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love, Melvins drummer Dale Crover, and Crover's girlfriend went to a P. J. Harvey show at Slim's, a legendary San Francisco music club. "Their names were on the guest list, but there was a big line out front," Nirvana manager Danny Goldberg later recalled. "Courtney wanted to go to the front. Kurt insisted on standing in line like everybody else." They waited but were soon recognized—whereupon someone from the club ran out and ushered them inside.

Immigrants, says The Economist, contribute skills, contacts, and new perspectives to their host nations. "For instance, a percentage-point bump in the share of American graduates who were born abroad raises patent applications by a whopping 15%. One study found that immigrants with a background in science, technology, engineering or maths accounted for 30-50% of the improvement in American productivity between 1990 and 2010. A study by the IMF found that by increasing the diversity of skills and ideas, migration has boosted living standards by 30% or so in both Britain and America."

"Sensible, pragmatic Glaswegian" is the phrase Richard Branson almost always uses to describe [his wife]--she serves as his principal source of gravity. Once, at a Microsoft conference, Bill Gates asked the crowd if there was even one person left who never used the Internet. Joan had to grab Branson's hand to keep him from raising it...

During the production of The Last Detail (1973), director Hal Ashby was arrested in Canada while trying to cross the border back into the United States. While scouting inexpensive locations, Ashby had made a pit stop to procure some "supplies"—a large amount of marijuana. "I had fly to Canada and get him out of the hoosegow," producer Peter Guber later recalled. "It was a total nightmare."

"Josh Hawley, Ted Cruz, and the rest of the Sedition Caucus," Late Night host Seth Meyers remarked after the attempt to storm Congress and halt the certification of Electoral College votes in January 2021, "should be remembered in history forever as seditionists who attempted a coup. And in Cruz's case, he should be remembered as looking like an alcoholic werewolf who got stuck half-way between transformations: 'There was a full moon, but then it got cloudy. But don't worry, I'm suing the cloud.'"

Mel Gibson's Apocalypto (2006) featured a scene in which a man is chased by a jaguar and another is mauled to death. "The jaguar was completely wild," Gibson later recalled during a discussion with some other directors. "They can't be trained. People thought that thing wasn't in the shot. They thought we put the jaguar in later, but it was actually chasing the guy. "It was on a leash," he added, "on a line, and you could put brakes on him if you needed to."

In Al Franken's book, Al Franken: Giant of the Senate, which contains an entire chapter (entitled "Sophistry") on "exceptionally smarmy" Texas Senator Ted Cruz, recalls a moment from a homorous "Gridiron Club" dinner with Cruz and Senator Amy Klobuchar:Ted," Amy smiled. "I've written a joke about you for the Gridiron, and I wanted to get your okay." "Sure," Ted smiled back. "What's the joke?" "Well," Amy smiled, "here it is: 'When most people think of a difficult cruise, they think of Carnival. But we Democrats in the Senate think of Ted.'" I noticed, of course, that she had softened the joke a bit, changing "a bad cruise" to "a difficult cruise" and changing "we think of Ted" to "we Democrats ...
