The Diary of a Young Girl, by Anne Frank

Like so many great books, Anne Frank's Diary of a Young Girl was rejected by a number of publishers. "The girl," one wrote, "doesn't, it seems to me, have a special perception or feeling which would lift that book above the 'curiosity' level."

* Frank's work has been translated into more than 70 languages and inspired numerous theatrical and film adaptations.
