For his role as a wandering gunfighter in Sergio Leone's classic Spaghetti Western A Fistful of Dollars (1967), Clint Eastwood was made up to look considerably older than his thirty-seven years. Leone also kept Eastwood facing the sun (hence his trademark squinty scowl) and used special effects to make his shoulders seem bigger. "When Michelangelo saw a block of marble he thought of David," the director later remarked. "When I saw Clint Eastwood, I thought of a block of marble! But that's the exact effect I wanted to achieve."
