With Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York well over budget, Miramax co-Chairman Harvey Weinstein (the film's exasperated producer) began to make his presence felt on the set, to the dismay of cast and crew alike.

One day a scene was shot in which Daniel Day-Lewis's character plunges a knife into another man's hand. When the 'victim' screamed, on cue, Day-Lewis was moved to add an improvisation to his next line: "Don't make that sound... Harvey!"

[Day-Lewis had written and performed in his first play by the time he was 15 years old.]
