In 1998, shortly before his marriage to Posh Spice, David Beckham was ejected during a World Cup match after kicking Argentine player Diego Simeone right in front of the referee. Fans were incensed at Beckham's behaviour during a must-win game (which England went on to lose). His new nickname following the incident? Stupid Spice!

Though Beckham apologized ("I want every fan to know how deeply sorry I am"), he was mercilessly heckled by fans spouting nasty lines (like, "I hope your son dies of cancer"). Some fans did find it in their hearts to accept his apology. One local church, for example, posted a sign reading: "God Forgives Even David Beckham!"

[Three years later Beckham was named captain of England's squad. "If someone had said after my sending off," Beckham said, "that I would be leading my country out within three years I would have laughed in their face!"]
