James Thurber, American writer. Credit: Fred Palumbo, World Telegram staff photographer (Public domain)
James Thurber's sense of humor may have been inherited: "One of his mother's finer moments in prankishness came when she borrowed a wheelchair at a faith-healing meeting, rolled down the aisle, suddenly stood up, and proclaimed that she could walk. With hallelujahs sounding about her, she fled on foot as the owner of the wheelchair recognized his property."

[Thurber was also a legendary prankster and Harold Ross (his editor at The New Yorker) frequently received (and fell for) fake phone calls in bizarre accents.]

["Did you hear that the atheists have produced a Christmas play?" Jay Leno once joked. "It's called Coincidence on 34th Street."]
