Thomas in 1905 (CC0)

During World War I, the poet Philip Edward Thomas was asked what he thought he was fighting for. Without hesitation, he bent down and collected a handful of dirt. "Literally," he replied, crumbling it between his fingers, "for this."

[Thomas was killed in action in 1917.]
