Tom Clancy's The Hunt For Red October Was Rejected By Countless Publishers
Tom Clancy's The Hunt for Red October was rejected by dozens of publishers before being accepted by the U. S. Naval Institute Press. Sales rocketed when President Reagan called the book "the perfect yarn," much as Ian Fleming's James Bond novels flew off the shelves after an endorsement from JFK. Fun fact: For years, Clancy wrote each day from 8:00 a.m. to noon at a computer in his personal library, a room which contained 3,000 books and 200 military hats. Remarkably, given the intricacy of his plots, Clancy did not generally write from an outline.

How Samuel Clemens Became Mark Twain
Before deciding to use the name "Mark Twain," Samuel Clemens used a variety of pen names - including Sergeant Fathom and W. Apaminondas Adrastus Blab. He signed humorous and imaginative sketches as "Josh," and used the pen name "Thomas Jefferson Snodgrass" for a series of humorous letters. Lockheed Martin's NASA probe crash blooper
In September 2004, Genesis, a NASA space probe designed by Lockheed Martin (the firm behind the warped Hubble space telescope and the Mars Climate Orbiter which, in 1999, did not so much orbit Mars as slam into it), plummeted to Earth when its drogue parachute failed to open. The problem? The switches designed to trigger its release were installed backwards. * Genesis, which collected a sample of solar wind particles and returned them to Earth for analysis, was the first NASA mission to return material since the Apollo program, and the first to return material from beyond the orbit of the Moon. Although the crash contaminated many of the sample collectors, some were successfully recovered.
