While passing through customs on their way back into America one day, Dave Pirner and his Soul Asylum bandmates were amused to hear their song "Runaway Train" playing on the radio in the customs officer's booth. "That's these guys," the band's road manager proudly declared. "They're on the radio!"  This made quite an impression on the officer, who promptly took the band aside and thoroughly searched them.

During a concert in Detroit one night in 1985, not long after his marriage to model/actress Julianne Phillips, Bruce Springsteen surprised fans by lying on the floor of the Silverdome stage, cuddling his six-string. "I always sleep with my guitar," he confessed. "At first my wife didn't like it, but she got used to it." Bruce and Julianne were divorced in 1989.

For OutKast's Andre 3000, who often topped lists of the world's best-dressed, sartorial necessity was the mother of invention. "A crazy thing happened when we did The Chris Rock Show: I couldn't find my pants," he later recalled. " So I said, 'I'll wear underwear with feather boas, silk scarves and ski boots.' Big Boi was daring me. And I said, 'I'll do it!' It looked great, and the song we did, 'Bombs Over Baghdad,' was energetic, so it all fit."

The video for Blink-182's No. 2 hit "What's My Age Again?" followed the guys' escapades as they ran naked around Los Angeles for a day. "Everyone, to this day, still thinks we're the naked band," frontman Tom DeLonge said. "But we only really did it for a very short time in our career." This type of humor worked its way into the band's next studio album, 2001's "Take Off Your Pants and Jacket," which featured the No. 2 hit "The Rock Show." By this time, the band's catalog included such songs as "Voyeur," "Dumpweed," "Dysentery Gary" and "Does My Breath Smell?" And they named their company Poo Poo Butt Inc. "We did it because it was the most immature, dumbest ...

One day in 1987, Willie Nelson (then in his mid-50s) was asked by a fan why, with all his money, he didn't just retire. "Shoot," Nelson replied with a grin after a moment of reflection, "all I really do is sing and play golf. Which one should I give up?"

Blues-rocker Ben Harper began dating actress Laura Dern after they met at one of his concerts in the fall of 2000. "Ben and I are quiet types," Dern remarked during an interview one day a year later. "The other night we were talking about how neither of us went to our high school proms, and Ben said, 'We have a prom every single night.'" [Harper and Dern married in December 2005 at their home in Los Angeles and had two children together, son Ellery Walker and daughter Jaya before divorcing in 2013.

When sneering rocker Billy Idol completed a 50-city tour in 1987, People marveled that he had not been arrested. "In Houston," the magazine reported, "unshy Billy wandered onstage before his show wearing nothing but a precariously draped towel. But what's that compared to... the Boston bit, where he simply dropped his pants for a full frontal shot—and thereby sold out the next day's performance?"

Fred Allen once spotted a haggard, unkempt, long-haired cellist in the orchestra pit in a vaudeville playhouse in Toledo, Ohio. "How much," Allen called out, "would you charge to haunt a house?"
