Incredibly, the lovely Reese Witherspoon was stood up by her date for the high school prom. What did she do? She went anyway... with her father.

The Toronto Telegram's final issue, in 1971
The Toronto Telegram's final issue, in 1971
As kids, Mike Myers and his brothers, Peter and Paul, all had paper routes. Peter, the most ambitious, had three of his own. "He worked himself so hard that he got a hernia," Mike recalls in his memoir, Canada, "for which The Toronto Telegram gave him an award known as the Golden Bag." Though the award referred to the employees' canvas delivery bags, it was a source of considerable amusement. "The hernia," Mike recalls, "had caused him to have a bright blue swollen bag, as blood had collected in his scrotum. You might imagine, to three infantile boys, how fantastically hilarious it was to have an award known as the Golden Bag."

Lana Turner by Paul Hesse, 1946 (public domain)
In 1955, 18-year-old Jack Nicholson landed an office job at MGM. "I saw everybody," he later recalled. "… Monroe, Bogie, Hepburn, Brando, Spencer Tracy, everybody worked there in the time I was there. It was hog heaven for me. I laid out on the lawn one day to try and get a look at Lana Turner's underpants…"

Travolta as Vinnie Barbarino in the ABC comedy Welcome Back, Kotter, c. 1976 (<a href=https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/>CC0</a>)
Travolta as Vinnie Barbarino in the ABC comedy Welcome Back, Kotter, c. 1976 (CC0)
Before Saturday Night Fever (1977) made him a celebrity supernova, John Travolta's role as Vinnie Barbarino—the scrofulous "sweathog" on Welcome Back, Kotter—had already made him a minor star. "John," PEOPLE reported in 1976, "is overtaking Henry Winkler in the fan-mail sweepstakes at ABC. He's warbled a pop single, Let Her In, that's crashed the Top 40 and is bulleting higher, and he's developing a cult that doesn't know when to quit. Case in point: "I'd taken a publicity picture wearing a shirt with mismatching buttons on the cuffs," Travolta recalled. "Now my agent's niece says all her friends in junior high are wearing mismatching buttons on their shirts! ... I'm definitely an opinion-maker."

Notwithstanding her phenomenal success, Christina Aguilera was not particularly popular in school. Indeed, when a DJ played her hit single "Genie In a Bottle" at her senior prom (in 1999), most of her classmates stopped dancing and left the floor.

Stoner Zone, Crossing Sign
Stoner Zone, Crossing Sign
While running for re-election as alderman in 2003, Milwaukee politician Pat Stoner complained that his signs were repeatedly stolen by young people who wanted them as souvenirs. “It seems the younger generation has decided that being a stoner is cool,” he complained. "It’s irritating,” he added. “They're $4.87 apiece.”

While taking drama lessons in the early 1950s, future comedian and director Mike Nichols worked as a busboy at a Howard Johnson's restaurant in New York. He was fired, he later recalled, because "when someone asked me the ice cream flavor of the week, I said 'chicken.'"

"Music keeps me young," Taylor Momsen once remarked. She was seventeen years old. Prettyandstupid.com joked: "Between her music and old folks Metamucil, so much shit pours out of her every day, Little Miss Golden Girls probably has the cleanest colon in the world. She'll be able to keep up her grueling schedule of cashing social security checks, playing Bingo and hitting early bird dinner specials for a long time. You go, girl... but careful with that walker! Osteoporosis can be a bitch."

Taking a break from the serious business of international affairs, the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia and Girard College presented one of the world's most beloved funnymen. From his humble beginnings in Philadelphia, Bill Cosby has gone on to achieve great success over the last five decades as an entertainer, comedian, actor, producer, author, educator, musician, and activist. He joins us to offer some reflections on the human condition through a few of the new characters portrayed in his latest book, I Didn’t Ask to be Born, But I’m Glad I Was. Proceeds from this program will benefit the World Affairs Council’s education programs, serving more than 2,100 students in 80 area schools. In 1986, Bill Cosby signed on to help Mattel Toys give birth to a new doll called My Child. One day, he gave an audience in New York a surprising sales pitch. "These dolls are great," Cosby said, "because they have none of the qualities that real children have. I tried to have my 19-year-old daughter declared legally stupid because I tell her 200 times not to do something and she continues to do it. When my son turned 16, his first words were: 'Wanna Porsche.' That was the last time I understood anything he said... The reason why 11-year-old girls are depressed is because they're standing at the window of life waiting for their breasts to come. My wife ...
