When Victoria Saw <I>King Lear</I>

As a young woman, Victoria once attended a performance of King Lear. When, having spent the first half of the play chatting with the lord chamberlain, she finally turned her attention to the stage, the lord chamberlain asked her opinion of the play. "A strange, horrible business," Victoria replied, "but I suppose good enough for Shakespeare's day."
