- On Dec. 5, 1664, a ship carrying 81 passengers sank in the Menai Strait. The only survivor was a man named Hugh Williams. On Dec. 5, 1785, another large ship sank, leaving a Hugh Williams as its only survivor. And on Dec. 5, 1860, yet another ship sank with its sole survivor another Hugh Williams.
